Beyond arcane and inaccurate, Rubin and Alvarado’s comments smack of an elitism that should bother anyone who believes in social equality.

The overarching technological utopianism espoused by many academics, policymakers, and self-proclaimed visionaries is typically uninformed by history or politics. And it’s a view that’s both tedious and dangerous.

Why draw from 30 years+ of community media practice? Out with the old and in with the new! (And cede control of hard-won community media resources and bandwidth back to greedy corporations in the process.)

They should know better.

The question for me is that since a certain amount of competitiveness and aggression seems to come with the genome, isn't football more acceptable as a social outlet than, say, invading small countries and despoiling them? Of course, we can hope that soccer will overtake football in the 21st century and that, like public hangings and bear baiting, football will recede into the brutal past. However, I will be watching since my partner in life is a fan.

The question of the endzone is interesting. Maybe it's the narcotic high from acquiring so much. Of course there's the other side of it requiring more acquisition. I'm not going to any parties.

Reminds me of my favorite Article in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights!

"Everyone has the right to freedom of opinion and expression; this right includes freedom to hold opinions without interference and to seek, receive and impart information and ideas through any media and regardless of frontiers." - Universal Declaration of Human Rights, Article 19 (UN, 1948)
